一、Twitter Profit Soars as User Base Shrinks

Twitter said Thursday profits rose sharply in the fourth quarter, lifted by gains in advertising despite a drop in its global user base.

Archaeological discoveries and studies have shown that China was one of the earliest places in the world to domesticate pigs about 9,000 years ago.

Nearly a third of U.K. firms may shift operations abroad because of Britain's pending departure from the European Union, a survey of 1,200 company directors suggested Friday, as political stalemate over a Brexit deal heightened jitters【紧张】 among businesses.

The humble game of Jenga has become the latest human pursuit to fall to machines, scientists have announced.

In what marks significant progress for robotic manipulation of real-world objects, a Jenga-playing machine can learn the complex physics involved in withdrawing wooden blocks from a tower through physical trial and error.

Domestic tech giants are racing to bank on the time-honored tradition to gain users for their products as competition at home heats up.

 

Giving cash in red envelopes (hongbao) is a traditional practice during the Spring Festival and it has been shifting online thanks to the promotion of mobile payment in which people use apps to send, snatch and draw virtual hongbao on their smartphones.

 

The digital red envelope race during the Chinese New Year holiday has become a new tradition since Tencent made a splash in 2014 with the hongbao service on its popular instant messaging app WeChat, drawing millions of new users for its mobile payment service.

 

The race has been escalating every year since then, with new players, new tricks and record sums of money to attract users to invite their friends to use these apps to boost their luck proving an effective means of gaining new users.

 

Chinese artificial intelligence giant Baidu took the lead this year by preparing a record high of 1.9 billion yuan (US$281.7 million) for digital red envelopes after becoming the exclusive red envelope partner of the China Central Television Spring Festival Gala, the most-watched annual show on Chinese New Year’s eve.

 

Alibaba continues its game of collecting five blessings to share the lucky money of 500 million yuan, while Weibo prompts users to retweet certain posts to share 100 million yuan. Many firms put 2,019 yuan into red envelopes as the biggest prize.

 

“I only got less than 100 yuan from the hongbao race in the past, but actually the fun is not about money. It lies in social networking,” said Liu Jiang, a sophomore in Beijing.

 

Not just red envelopes

Behind the red envelopes battle lies the growth priorities of China’s tech titans as well as the latest industrial trends.

 

Baidu’s hongbao campaign aims to lure more users to its flagship artificial intelligence-powered search and news feed app as the company steps up its investment in AI applications, an emerging cash cow for the NASDAQ-listed company.

 

The bid is also expected to give a leg up to Baidu’s financial services platform, as Internet firms are keen to grab more mobile payment market share and tap growing wealth management demands.

 

Tencent rolled out a hongbao service for firms to give red envelopes to their employees in its latest efforts to boost services for corporate customers.

 

The red envelope battle has an emerging new group of players this year as short videos rise as popular social media platforms.

 

Leading short-video platform Douyin, the exclusive social media partner of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala this year, has launched a red envelope game worth 500 million yuan.

 

六、How to make work more enjoyable

DO YOU enjoy your job? Only 13% of employees feel engaged in their jobs, according to a Gallup survey of global workers. That is a pretty depressing statistic, considering how much of our lives we spend in our jobs. If we spend 40 hours a week, 48 weeks a year, over 40 years, that equates to almost nine full years in the office or factory.

Interact socially with your colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere and you are more likely to co-operate fruitfully on a task. Give other people space to think and be creative.

There is an irony in some of this sound advice. Mr Daisley works for Twitter, one of the great distractions from worker efficiency. Modern technology has had a terrible impact on the length of the effective working day. An American study found that 60% of professionals were remaining connected to work for 13.5 hours every week day and another five hours at weekend. A study by Tom Jackson of Loughborough University suggests we are interrupted by work emails around 96 times in an eight-hour day, or once every five minutes. The smartphone is an electronic Big Brother, straight out of George Orwell.

Another feature of modernity is the dreaded open plan office, which may lead to reduced face-to-face communication. The author cites a study showing that people in open-plan offices also take more sick days. They are also interrupted every three minutes, on average, and it can take another eight minutes for their full concentration to return. By which time, of course, they have been interrupted again.

On a grey Wednesday in January, when the train is packed and every other passenger is coughing up a lung, most of us have one thought: Friday is just two days away.
